Principles of lasing in microcavities and its use in designing new systems for medical diagnosis

Fluorescence of organic dyes, proteins, and quantum dots is widely used for analysis of biomolecules. The characteristics of fluorescence such as its spectrum and intensity change during various molecular interactions. In many cases, however, the fluorescence signal is too weak to be discerned against the background noise. By placing the diagnostic system into a specially designed microcavity, one can obtaine laser or stimulated emission, which can be used for enhancing the system's sensitivity.
