Study from the laboratories of Nano-Bioengineering and Hybrid Photonic Nanomaterials, NRNU MEPhI, chosen to be promoted as Editor's Pick

The Review of Scientific Instruments, a highly ranked international journal, has published online a paper presenting a recent development by K.E. Mochalov, I.S. Vaskan, D.S. Dovzhenko, Yu.P. Rakovich, and I.R. Nabiev, of the laboratories of Nano-Bioengineering (LNBE) and Hybrid Photonic Nanomaterials (LPNM) (A versatile tunable microcavity for investigation of light–matter interaction, Review of Scientific Instruments).

The editors have informed the authors that the paper has been chosen to be promoted as an Editor's Pick. It will be posted on the journal homepage, and brief summaries will appear on the journal's social media channels. This appreciation is explained by the novel, efficient, and versatile design of the device, as well as unique opportunities it offers to this field of research.

Resonant interaction between quantum emitters and confined electromagnetic field is particularly interesting because it provides control over coupled matter properties. The coupling is commonly achieved by placing the emitters into a cavity. The novel design of a tunable microcavity presented in this study substantially facilitates the research by making it possible to investigate light–matter interactions in both strong and weak coupling regimes for almost any sample in the spectral range from UV to IR. The device is based on a λ/2 Fabry–Perot microcavity consisting of a plane and a convex mirrors ensuring plane-parallelism in at least one point and minimizing the mode volume. Nanometer-precise tuning of the microcavity length is provided by a Z-piezopositioner. The design also provides for replacement of samples in the cavity. The new device is easy to use and suitable for mass production.

The use of this instrument offers new opportunities for studying the effects of coupling on Raman scattering, chemical reaction rate, conductivity, lasing, nonradiative energy transfer, and other physical, chemical, and biological functions. This is also an important step towards numerous practical applications of the light–matter coupling effect involving modulation of physical, chemical, and biological processes.

The Review of Scientific Instruments is a journal published by the American Institute of Physics (AIP) since 1930; it publishes regular and review articles on scientific instrumentation, apparatuses, and techniques for all areas of science, including physics, chemistry, and biology, as well as on developments of novel instruments and materials.
