Joint Seminar of the International Laboratory of Hybrid Photonic Nanomaterials, Laboratory of Nano-Bioengineering, and Department no. 81 of NRNU MEPhI

A seminar of the International Laboratory of Hybrid Photonic Nanomaterials (LHPN), Laboratory of Nano-Bioengineering (LNBE), and Department no. 81 of MEPhI was held on April 20.

LHPN is a new division of MEPhI founded in the framework of the Russian Government program for support of research carried out under supervision of world's leading scientists in Russian institutions of higher education (RF Government Decree no. 220 of April 9, 2010).

Professor Yuriy P. Rakovich, head of LHPN, presented a report on Linear and Nonlinear Nanoscale Optical Effects: Implications of Designing Next-Generation Biosensors, where he told about the main fields of research in the new laboratory. This is primarily the development and analysis of hybrid nanostructures wit new optical properties and estimation of the prospects of their use in nano-biosensing.

Sergey Ryabchuk (LHPN) and Konstantin Mochalov (LNBE) presented a study on A Tunable FabryPérot Microcavity. The main advantage of the new design of a plane–convex optical cavity, serving as the main device for obtaining the strong coupling effect, is an adjustable distance between the mirrors, which allows the splitting of both electron energy levels and vibrational levels involved in the coupling.

Finally, Viktor Krivenkov, a postgraduate student at MEPhI Department no. 81, presented his PhD completion report at the seminar. His PhD project entitled Resonance Energy Transfer in a Nano–Bio Hybrid Material Based on Semiconductor Quantum Dots and the Protein Bacteriorhodopsin upon One- and Two-Photon Excitations is part of research in hybrid nanomaterials carried out in collaboration between LNBE and Department no. 81. The results of this study not only are of theoretical importance, but also have implications for optoelectronics. The PhD project was supervised by Alexander A. Chistyakov, DSc, professor of Department no. 81.
