Researchers from the Laboratory of Nano-Bioengineering of NRNU MEPhI participated in the annual colloquium of the ICENAP international collaboration in Reims, France

September 19–21, 2018, the annual colloquium of the ICENAP (Integrated Computational Engineering, Characterization and Validation of Semiconductor Colloidal Nanocrystals with Advanced Properties) international collaboration was held at the University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne, France. The colloquium summarized the outcomes of a four-year international project on the synthesis and characterization of quantum dots, fluorescent semiconductor nanocrystals, to be used in biomedical applications.

The Nature: Scientific Reports published another joint study on the screening of antitumor drugs from the Laboratory of Nano-Bioengineering of NRNU MEPhI and two French research groups

A paper by Professor Igor Nabiev, the leading scientist of the Laboratory of Nano-Bioengineering, and his French colleagues from the universities of Reims and Nantes (Lafont, F., Ayadi, N., Charlier, C., Weigel, P., Nabiev, I., Benhelli-Mokrani, H, Fleury, F. Assessment of DNA-PKcs kinase activity by quantum dot–based microarray) came out in the Nature: Scientific Reports, a top-rated international journal. Russian Science Foundation grant goes to a project directed by a young researcher at the cluster of the laboratories of Hybrid Photonic Nanomaterials and Nano-Bioengineering

The project on Two-Photon Processes in a Hybrid Material Based on Semiconductor Quantum Dots and Plasmonic Nanostructures to Be Used in Photovoltaics and Optoelectronics has won the Russian Science Foundation grant competition for Researches Carried out by Groups Directed by Young Researchers. Viktor Krivenkov, a young researcher at the Laboratory of Nano-Bioengineering who has just defended his PhD thesis, is the project's principal investigator.

Three invited lectures and three presentations from the laboratories of Nano-Bioengineering and Hybrid Photonic Nanomaterials of NRNU MEPhI presented at two international forums on research and developments at the interface of photonics and nanotechnology

In early June two international forums on research and developments in photonic nanostructures and their applications in various fields, from solar energy utilization to biomedicine, were held in St. Petersburg, Russia: Photonic Colloidal Nanostructures: Synthesis, Properties, and Applications (PCNSPA 2018) and 5th International A.M. Prokhorov Symposium on Lasers in Medicine and Biophotonics в рамках 18th International Conference on Laser Optics (ICLO 2018). Researchers from the cluster of two international laboratories of NRNU MEPhI, the Laboratory of Nano-Bioengineering (LNBE) and the Laboratory of Hybrid Photonic Nanomaterials (LPNM), took part in both forums, where they made a total of six presentations, including three invited plenary lectures by the leading scientists of both laboratories.

The KnowledgeE platform has published papers based on the reports presented at the 2nd International Symposium on Physics, Engineering and Technologies for Biomedicine dedicated to the 75th anniversary of MEPhI. The symposium was organized by the Institute of Engineering Physics for Biomedicine (PhysBio) of NRNU MEPhI. Researchers from the Laboratory of Nano-Bioengineering of NRNU MEPhI participated in the annual colloquium of the ICENAP international collaboration in Dresden, Germany

September 10–13, 2017, the annual colloquium of the ICENAP (Integrated Computational Engineering, Characterization and Validation of Semiconductor Colloidal Nanocrystals with Advanced Properties) international collaboration was held at the Technical University of Dresden, Germany. The subject of the colloquium was the progress in the synthesis and analysis of luminescent semiconductor nanocrystals (quantum dots) with improved characteristics: a photoluminescence quantum yield close to 100%, excellent long-term stability, and suitability for various biological applications. NRNU MEPhI was represented by Dr. Pavel S. Samokhvalov, senior researcher, who made a report on the methods for synthesis of next-generation quantum dots and analysis of their optical and structural characteristics.

"Hybrid States of Biomolecules in the Strong Coupling Regime", a joint study by the international laboratories of Hybrid Photonic Nanomaterials (Prof. Yu. Rakovich) and Nano-Bioengineering (Prof. I. Nabiev), accepted by the Nanotechnologies in Russia

Strong coupling is known to result from reversible energy exchange between the excited state of atom-like exciton systems or molecules and electromagnetic field leading to the formation of hybrid light–matter states.

Obtaining the hybrid states with the use of biological molecules is of considerable interest in various fields, from microelectronics to medicine. For example, it has been shown that strong coupling resulting from hybridization of electron transitions and photonic modes allows controlling the rate and efficiency of chemical reactions, as well as substantially increasing the conductance of organic semiconductors and efficiency of nonradiative energy transfer. Apart from electron transitions, the strong coupling effect can be obtained at vibrational levels, which has promising implications for life sciences.

A new apparatus for analyzing 3D nanostructures: A publication by LNBE researchers in the Review of Scientific Instruments

Researchers of LNBE in collaboration with their colleagues from several Russian and foreign research centers have developed a new apparatus for reconstructing and analyzing the 3D nanostructures of various materials on the basis of scanning probe microscopy of the surfaces of consecutive ultrathin sections. The paper entitled "A novel design of a scanning probe microscope integrated with an ultramicrotome for serial blockface nanotomography" describing the new development has been accepted for publication by the Review of Scientific Instruments, an international journal published by the American Institute of Physics and specializing in new instruments, devices, and techniques.

We've come in first—again!!! LNBE has won another R&D project competition, this time under the program for "Research in the Framework of Bilateral Collaboration with the Republic of Korea"

The project on "Development of Novel Nanoprobes for Molecular Imaging Based on Conjugates of Quantum Dots Fluorescing in the Infrared Spectral Region and Single-Domain Antibodies" is an absolute winner in Lot no. 2014-14-585-0006 "Research in Nanotechnologies and New Materials, Life Sciences, and Biotechnologies in Collaboration with Research Centers of the Republic of Korea" of the Federal Research and Developments Competition. The LNBE project has come in first place among 16 applicants, institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences and universities, having scored almost 30 points more than the second project in the winners' list.

The conference "Science of the Future" organized by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation was held in St. Petersburg, Russia, on September 17–20. Publications from LNBE in Russian journals

Late last year and early this year, Russian journals have published two studies presenting the results of two line of research in LNBE, development of nano–bio hybrid films for efficient utilization of solar energy and engineering of a new generation of systems for early diagnosis of cancer.

In both studies, bioengineered structures containing natural proteins and fluorescent semiconductor nanocrystals (quantum dots, QDs) have been fabricated and analyzed.

The LNBE team registers an innovative company under the name Nanomultiplex LLC. The research project has got approval of the Scientific Council of the Skolkovo Foundation. Nanomultiplex is going to become a Skolkovo resident.

The goal of the project prepared in LNBE is to develop a system of methods and tools for designing and manufacturing a versatile clinical diagnostic platform based on nano–bio hybrid biomolecular diagnostic probes. The Skolkovo Foundation has scored the project high.

The paper entitled Nano-Biophotonic Hybrid Materials with Controlled FRET Efficiency Engineered from Quantum Dots and Bacteriorhodopsin was written by Dr. Sukhanova, the head of the Nanomedicine Group and Prof. Nabiev, Leading Scientist of LNBE in collaboration with their French colleagues (Nicolas Bouchonville, Anthony Le Cigne, Alyona Sukhanova, Michael Molinari and Igor Nabiev. The ACS NANO (ISI Thomas Reuters impact factor = 11.421) publishes the paper "Large Enhancement of Nonlinear Optical Response in a Hybrid Nanobiomaterial Consisting of Bacteriorhodopsin and Cadmium Telluride Quantum Dots"

The paper Resonance Energy Transfer in Conjugates of Semiconductor Nanocrystals and Organic Dye Molecules by Dr. Mikhail Artemyev, the leader of the Nanochemistry Group of the LNBE, has been published in no. 6 of the Journal of Nanophotonics. The electronic Journal of Nanophotonics publishes the latest studies on the synthesis and application of nanostructured photosensitive materials.

Nanochemistry Group has developed a technique for one-pot synthesis of green CdSSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots under mild conditions

Researchers of the LNBE Nanochemistry Group have developed a novel technique for synthesis of small CdSSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots with a luminescence peak at 510–540 nm and quantum yield of about 40%. This technique allows nanocrystals to be obtained without using trioctylphosphine (TOP) or phosphinic acids, which are expensive as well as toxic. (It should be reminded that protocols for synthesis of quantum dots using phosphines, including TOP, though widely used today, still have a number of drawbacks.)

An LNBE research team headed by Dr. Oleinikov have applied for a grant in the framework of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR) call for proposals on targeted basic research on topical interdisciplinary subjects. The project entitled Development of a Multiplex Test System Based on Semiconductor Nanocrystals (Quantum Dots) for Identifying Biological Terrorism Agents falls within Section 1.2 “Designing of Novel Microsensors of Hazardous Explosives, Chemicals, and Biological Agents on the Basis of Nanotechnologies” of Topic 2 “Basic Research in the Safety and Control of Terrorism Priority Area.”

A study on New Directions in Quantum Dot–Based Cytometry Detection of Cancer Serum Markers and Tumor Cells by Dr. Akinfieva and Dr. Sukhanova (Nanomedicine Group) and Prof. Nabiev (head of LNBE) is in press at the prestigious international journal Critical Reviews in Oncology/Hematology (with an impact factor of 4.41) publishing reviews by the world’s leading specialists in new methods of cancer diagnosis (http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/journaldescription.cws_home/522345/description#description).

International Colloquium of the Alexander von Humboldt Society on The Role of Fundamental Sciences in Society dedicated to the completion of the 2011–2012 Russian–German Year for Education, Science, and Innovations was held in Moscow from May 31 to June 2, 2012 (www.rossijsko-germanskij-god.ru). The colloquium opened with statements by representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, Russian Academy of Sciences, Ministry of Science of the Federal Republic of Germany, and Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Russian Federation.

Dr. Shemetov and Dr. Sukhanova of the Nanomedicine Group and Prof. Nabiev, the head of the LNBE, have published an article on interactions of nanoparticles with proteins and peptides in the ACS NANO, a journal ranking 5th in impact factor in the Nanoscience category and 9th in the Chemistry category.

Publication in the Biopolymers—Implications of Protein Structure Instability: From Physiological to Pathological Secondary Structure

Dr. Sukhanova and Dr. Shemetov of the LNBE Nanomedicine Group and Prof. Nabiev, the head of the LNBE, together with their colleagues from the United Kingdom and Spain, have published a paper entitled Implications of Protein Structure Instability: From Physiological to Pathological Secondary Structure.

This paper (Sukhanova, A., Poly, S., Shemetov, A., Bronstein, I., Nabiev, I. (2012) Biopolymers, 97 (8), 577-588, http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/) deals with the possible mechanisms of proteinopathies, disorders related to pathological conformational changes of protein molecules. These are Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Creutzfeldt–Jacob diseases, type II diabetes mellitus, and a number of other diseases plaguing humanity.

The paper published in the Biopolymers sets the main research strategies in this field encompassing both the therapeutic implications of the mechanisms involved in aggregation of proteins resulting in amyloid fibrils and the well-known fact that nanoparticles may selectively induce pathogenic changes in protein structure, thereby promoting amyloid formation and the resultant diseases.

Dr. Sukhanova (Nanomedicine Group), Prof. Oleinikov (Biophysics Group), Dr. Artemyev (Nanochemistry Group), and Prof. Nabiev (the head of the LNBE) in collaboration with researchers of Aix-Marseille University and the University of Reims Champagne‐Ardenne, France, published a study entitled Oriented Conjugates of Monoclonal and Single-Domain Antibodies with Quantum Dots for Flow Cytometry and Immunohistochemistry Diagnostic Applications.

The authors of this study (А. Sukhanova, A., Artemyev, M., Oleinikov, V., Nabiev, I., et al. (2012) Proc. SPIE Vol. 8232, 82320T) successfully used advanced nano-bioengineering methods to fabricate unprecedentedly small nanoparticles recognizing cancer biomarkers that can be used for simultaneously detecting a whole number of biomarkers.

Dr. Artemyev (Nanochemistry Group), Dr. Sukhanova (Nanomedicine Group), and Prof. Nabiev (the head of the LNBE) in collaboration with researchers of the University of Reims Champagne‐Ardenne (France), Belarusian State Ubniversity (Belarus), and St. Petersburg State University of Informatics, Mechanics, and Optics (Russia) published a paper entitled Chemical Substitution of Cd Ions by Hg in CdSe Nanorods and Nanodots: Spectroscopic and Structural Examination.

LNBE researchers were the first to study the formation of CdHgSe ternary nanocrystals through chemical cationic substitution in the isostructural zinc blende CdSe quantum dots and non-isostructural wurtzite CdSe quantum dots and nanorods.
