A project of the Laboratory of Nano-Bioengineering, NRNU MEPhI, won the competition of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research for the best interdisciplinary basic research projects of 2018

The LNBE project on Control of the Spectral, Spatial, and Temporal Emission Characteristics of Hybrid Systems Based on Semiconductor Quantum Dots Fluorescing in the IR Spectral Range and Incorporated in One-Dimensional Porous Silicon Photonic Crystals has won the competition for the best interdisciplinary basic research projects of 2018.

Hybrid structures consisting of 1D photonic crystals with incorporated luminophores are among the most promising objects of basic studies and practical applications in the fields of photonics, integral optics, and optoelectronics. Light–matter interaction in microcavities with sizes of the order of the wavelength makes it possible to obtain enhanced luminescence, coherent radiation, and laser generation.

The main objectives of the project are to analyze the spectral and temporal characteristics of the photoluminescence of the hybrid structures, the spatial distribution of the luminescence, and its dependence on the parameters of the hybrid structure in the IR region; to construct a theoretical model describing the optical properties of the structures in terms of the light–matter coupling, and to explore the possibility of obtaining a source of coherent radiation and lasing.

The results of the new LNBE's project will have practical implementations for designing miniature sources of coherent radiation and using the hybrid structures based on semiconductor quantum dots and porous silicon photonic crystals in integral optics and optoelectronics.

Dmitriy Dovzhenko, PhD, a young researcher who has put forward the scientific concept of the project, will be responsible for the overall scientific direction of the project in the laboratory, under supervision and coordination of Professor Igor Nabiev, PhD, DSc, leading scientist of LNBE.

It is a special pleasure that the project applied by Dmitriy, who has just defended his PhD thesis in physics and mathematics, has had a solid win in this rather challenging competition.

This achievement leaves no doubt as to the excellent prospects of the research and developments carried out by young researchers at LNBE.
