Pavel Linkov, junior researcher at Laboratory of Nano-Bioengineering, NRNU MEPhI, successfully defends Ph.D. thesis at University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne, France

Late December 2018, Pavel Linkov, junior researcher at Laboratory of Nano-Bioengineering (LNBE), NRNU MEPhI, excellently defended his Ph.D. thesis on The Synthesis and Physico-chemical and Optical Characterisation of Fluorescent Nanocrystals for Biomedial Applications at the University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne, France.


The thesis summarizes the results of research aimed at designing next-generation quantum dots representing ultrasmall fluorescent cores coated with a multilayered protective shell. The approach used there made it possible to obtain nanoparticles with a fluorescence quantum yield close to 100% with an extremely small physical size—at least twice as small as that of the "traditional" quantum dots. Furthermore, these nanoparticles were conjugated with acridine derivatives, first synthesized in this research, which both served as inhibitors of the telomerase enzyme and ensured the delivery of the nanolabel into live cells.


The main result of the Ph.D. project is the fabrication of stable, bright theranostic (diagnostic + therapeutic) probes based on quantum dots and acridine derivatives, as well as the demonstration of their functional activity in imaging and inhibiting human telomerase, an important target in cancer treatment.

Pavel Linkov's Ph.D. project was supervised by Prof. Igor Nabiev, Prof. Janos Sapi, and Prof. Lev Sidorov and permanently monitored and coordinated by Pavel Samokhvalov, Ph.D., senior researcher at LNBE.

The research was performed in the framework of the international postgraduate training program and scientific collaboration between LNBE of NRNU MEPhI, laboratories of the University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne, and the Laboratory of Thermochemistry of Lomonosov Moscow State University. The thesis, written in English, was defended at the University of Reims, the thesis board consisting of French and Russian scientists on a parity basis.


It should be noted that the results obtained in the course of Pavel's Ph.D. research have been published in 25 experimental articles, which substantially exceeds the traditional international level.

It is no surprise that the thesis board gave Pavel's thesis the highest evaluation used in French universities:

"To award the degree of Doctor of the University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne with distinction and written compliment to the thesis' defender from the members of Thesis Board."
